What starting inventory should be used in the new world?
Tekkit server
My idea for the server is for us to start by building a small village, gather resources, and eventually build a large, modern city with several districts (industrial, rural, residential, commercial etc.). Everyone would be able to set up their own companies, and we'd have things like a nuclear power plant, a fuel refinery, bakeries, farms, a post office, but also sewers, dams and anything else one could imagine.
Once the village becomes a real city, there should also be a City Council with two or three members, who will oversee the development of the city. Being the server admin, I should be one of the members of the Council. Anyone else wishing to join the City Council (this won't prevent you from having your own companies)?
As there will be several pipe/cable systems underground, we should probably assign a specific layer to each: for example, the sewer could be located at layer 50, cables from the nuclear power plant at 40, fuel pipelines at 30 etc.
The sewer should use obsidian pipes to suck in any items thrown into sinks/toilets etc., and would eventually end in a nearby river, ocean or sewage treatment plant.
The nuclear power plant should be located quite some distance from the rest of the city, to prevent disaster in case of a nuclear meltdown. I was thinking of an underground facility, located inside a giant, artificial cave. The main reactor would be placed inside a thick, metal sphere supported by pillars on all sides, at the centre of the cave.
The city itself should obviously be located near the ocean, so it always has plenty of water, and so it can have a port.
My little brother and sister want to join the server too, and would run the post office in town. Our postal system would be an underground system of pipes transporting items from mailboxes to the post office, where items will be sorted and redirected towards their final destination (so all houses etc. would be linked to the office using transport pipes).
What do you guys think?

Re: Tekkit server
let's start with one small base, then gradually get everything sorted out, I don't know how good you are with tekkit, but I'm a newbie at it also, could I overheat the nuclear powerplant?

Re: Tekkit server
Good idea.
I prefer playing Tekkit with having a great big house/mansion/tech lab where everyone shares resources. To me, it's much easier and then we could actually get progress done. Basicly like communistic scientists.

Re: Tekkit server
I'm new to Tekkit too, but I'm quickly learning how everything works. I can build large pipe and cable systems, quarries, oil refineries, builders and quite a lot more. Playing a lot of LittleBigPlanet has made it far easier to understand advanced logic with a lot of gates too! Not completely sure how Nuclear Reactors work yet (I still have to build a real one), but I know how to make them explode!
Edit: It may be a good idea to build 'thin' houses: I've been using the thinner blocks Tekkit adds a lot lately, and you can build awesome houses using them! Building a house using 4-pixel thick walls allows for some truly amazing builds, and as you get several thin blocks for slicing up one normal block, it's efficient too!

Re: Tekkit server
Yeah, making them microblocks really does get the bang for the buck. If you really wanted to put a diamond block on display, then you could slice it up into a bunch of pieces, then put them around your house. Or making marble walls. The only downside is when you have to put torches or stuff on the walls. But you could just use glowstone for that.
I'm not that good at Tekkit, the best I'v done is made a nano-armour chestplate and a nano-armour helmet. But I know how to do other things, just haven't done them yet. Energy Condenser is pretty much the best thing ever.

Re: Tekkit server
I'm happy for Notix Green being a Waste Disposal Company.
I'll take your rubbish and turn it into more useful stuff. Including energy for terraforming deserts into lush forest. Or just to resupply the city...
I like the idea of a city, that way it's more like single player with interactions.

Re: Tekkit server
Actually, torches and most other things that attach to walls can be placed on the sliced blocks: they just can't be placed on all sides. I'll post pictures of some of my creations soon.
The Waste Disposal company idea sounds great!

Re: Tekkit server
Is there going to be any sort of rules of what I can use the waste based energy for? Like could I use it to be sufficient from the Grid?
Re: Tekkit server
I think you can use it for almost anything. Using the energy to power your own facilities would be a smart thing to do indeed, and you could use the excess energy to power houses or something.
I think we should somehow encourage people to throw their junk into the sewers: most people tend to just add extra chests when they collect too many useless items. Perhaps using the energy to power facilities everyone can benefit of would encourage them.

Re: Tekkit server
I personally don't think that you have to throw your junk away, because I always need something that I just threw away.
I never knew you could place torches and stuff on microblocks.
If we somehow get Thaumcraft on, that would make me very happy. You might be happy too because of the cool trees, or if you understand the mod, having awesome machines.

Thaumcraft isn't Multiplayer.
And people always have rubbish. Like Spider Eyes and dirt..
Re: Tekkit server
I got my laptop, and the server is online right now! It'll have to go down in about 20 minutes though, but it'll be back later today!
Re: Tekkit server
You never know when you need Spider Eyes or dirt. But you wouldn't need both of them for pretty much everything.

Re: Tekkit server
I'm having some connection issues (I can't connect to my router using wireless connections), and I think the server IP has changed again, so the server won't be online as soon as I wanted it to. I'm looking for a way to fix these problems, but to no avail yet.
Re: Tekkit server
Ok.
Also, on the server, can you leave it on for a while? Because it's pretty hard to get on sometimes because of timezones.

Re: Tekkit server
It'd be best to simply put the server online at the times at which most people are online.
Necro is usually online from 16 to 2 GMT, Notix from 12 to 1 GMT, so for now, it seems best to put it online between 16 and 1 GMT. At what times are you usually online?

I normally come on when I can. So basicly same time as Necro.

Re: Tekkit server
I'll put it online in a few minutes, I'm updating some drivers to see if I can improve my wireless connection.
EDIT: Server is working properly, and it's great fun when there's a lot of people online! My laptop can keep up quite easily, too!

Re: Tekkit server
Sorry, I had to go before to cross country practice. Will it be up later or what, because I like it, as long as we don't start arguments. (Looks at Ryiin)

Re: Tekkit server
It'll be up soon, I'm looking for a plug-in that prevents Creeper environment damage. Our house is constantly getting blown up by Creepers that enter through the basement...
EDIT: Found a good plug-in, going to check if it works now. It disables Creeper and Ghast damage (to terrain only), without removing the explosion animation and sound. I've turned TNT explosions on for now, as they can be used to create artificial caves more easily. If you want TNT damage turned off too, I'll change the config.
EDIT 2: Found a great location for the city, and there's an enormous oil reservoir below it! The geyser is about 20 blocks high!

Re: Tekkit server
That's a lot of oil. Guess I can't rule with my stone halberd anymore. Time for Diamond Halberd, that'l tell my slaves who's who.
Anyways, What is the terrain like around you geyser? Is it a boring plain or desert, or is it a mountains biome. Mountains are the best looking, you know. Who cares if it takes 2 more extra minutes to set up a base.

Re: Tekkit server
The city stands in a desert that's near a jungle biome (with huge rubber trees as well) and a snowy biome, so no big hills.
I want to make a watermill, will that still be possible or are we advancing too fast? for such energy methods? and if I can make one, could any of you help me since the tutorials on youtube all have more negative votes and comments than positive

Re: Tekkit server
The site I found is a huge open plain, so it's easy to build there. The oil geyser is located on that field, close to one of the hills there. There are also mountains next to the field, and an ocean, and it's not very far from where we've build our current houses!
You can build a watermill. I've no idea how to build one though, so I won't be able to help you very much... I'll see if I can find a good tutorial or something though.
