mods are there for people who want more out of standard minecraft (why else would they make them). Notch agrees on this, that's why he is implementing some mods himself (baby animals, hunger) if people don't like upgrades, Notch wouldn't have to bother releasing new updates since people are already pleased... Another reason why this server uses mods is because they are very helpful and some are just plain awesome, you can't open a gate (if you can open them at all) in the normal minecraft using a lever, or perhaps even a wand, can you?

of course there are some mods that do make the server slower, but if these are installed, Ryiin tries to (from the info I've gathered whilst being online) remove them and starts looking for a better alternative.

some mods go a bit far (like the one used to change you texture pack or the one forcing us to use spoutcraft) and of course it's annoying you can't play in your favourite texture pack, but this way they try to create some harmony in the environments for all of us, for instance if netherrack looks like a metal in our tp and you have it as bricks, the colour combinations and and block combinations might look very different for the rest of us and can then be seen as ugly, resolving in the destruction of the built structure while for you it might have been totally awesome(and for the rest of us aswell if we'd been using your texture pack) and unfortunately for these kind of mods (different items, creatures and textures) we need spoutcraft...

Oh look, the Elithian Alliance is a temporary creative mode server, and the mods don't disrupt creative mode at all! All they do is add redstone stuff, commands, and other stuff I don't even know/remember about!

Oh, but if you could only just go onto the server, I bet you'd know that! Oh, and you could at least TRY to fix the reason why spoutcraft is slow or whatever.

And if you want a "mod-free" creative mode minecraft, just find one yourself, OR play the free version of minecraft. I doubt there are many mods in classic.

Huge server, creative, no mods (A few plugins for admins to monitor things) Flag my name up (Verahawk) and they'll give you as much help as you need (Usually =])

As for sproutcraft being slow, try going into options, graphics, details and make sure far render is off (It's still buggy) and tweaking some settings around until it's not laggy.
